Aeroplan Premium Economy Redemptions Added

Aeroplan Premium Economy redemptions have been added to the award chart. Since Air Canada introduced rouge and premium economy, there has never been a way to use Aeroplan miles for premium economy redemptions until today.

The premium economy redemptions are sandwiched between the economy and business class prices. Thankfully, there are no adjustments to any of the current redemptions, a fear many members had. The prices are roughly halfway between an economy and business class redemption.

These routes are currently available for premium economy redemptions on Air Canada, as well as international destinations served by Air Canada Rouge, such as Vancouver – Osaka and Montreal – Nice.

Analysis of an Aeroplan Premium Economy Redemption

I don’t find these redemptions particularly attractive, because I probably wouldn’t fly premium economy internationally. The only flights I’d fly rouge premium economy on are to the US, Sun Destinations, and Hawaii. These routes are still considered as business class at this point, and require the business class price for miles.

With international redemptions, fuel surcharges are added for members other than Super Elite 100k top-tier members.

The incremental price for business class is also very low. Premium rouge/economy to Europe is 37,500 miles, but flat-bed business class is only 7,500 more each way. If you use an airline that avoids fuel surcharges, you’ll save even more out of pocket compared to redeeming Aeroplan for premium economy.

What’s really interesting is how fast programs can change, and how your miles are subject to inflation. 5 years ago, a First Class Mini RTW redemption only cost 120,000 Aeroplan miles. Now, 120,000 miles won’t even get you into premium economy to Asia. But then again, you have signup bonuses increased compared to the past, with the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite as well as the American Express Gold Card offering 25,000 points as a welcome bonus. Both come with no fee for the first year, so are essentially free. That wouldn’t happen five years ago.

The Aeroplan Premium Economy Redemptions are pulled from the N class inventory bucket, also a paid fare bucket. You can find availability using ExpertFlyer under the Flight Availability tab.

I wonder if these award ticket would earn miles if you credited the flights to another FFP…

For the most part, this should match the award inventory that the Aeroplan site displays. You can see the updated Aeroplan award chart here.

  1. How do you manage to ‘credit’ to a different FFP on an Aeroplan redemption? I’ve always had my Aeroplan number attached to Aeroplan bookings with no option to change it. Do you have to call in to AC or AE to update that?
