Fairmont is one of my secondary hotel chains I prefer, because it’s really easy to get top-tier status because of the American Express Platinum Card. With just five nights, you can get top-tier status which gets you a free hotel certificate valid at nearly all Fairmont properties, as well as $100+ food and beverage credits and suite upgrades certificates.

There are many properties that have rates for around $100-120 during a sale, so even if you only stay at one or two Fairmont hotels a year normally, you can mattress run the rest while getting close to a 100% return in benefits back.
The only problem is that other than the those certificates, elite treatment seems kind of lacking depending on property. As you can see, there aren’t any guaranteed benefits that most other chains offer, such as premium internet, lounge access, or upgrades at check-in.

Fairmont Platinum also offers a personalized welcome amenity. Usually, it’s a bottle of wine, cheese plate/fruit platter, or something similar.
This was the welcome amenity I got at the Fairmont Santa Monica, which I was just at. I have to say, I was stunned.

I know some people really love Fairmont. Personally I just don’t get it. I’ll stick with Hilton.
My brother leaves from YVR so usually stays the night before at the airport Fairmont so he has become a ‘known’ guest so I assume that gets better than two bottles of water.
We had really bad experience with the AC Palacio de Santa Paula (Marriott) in Granada, Spain last month and are still trying to get Marriott to help settle the situation – but so far no interest on their part. Even filed a complaint with the Granada Tourism Board.
Once again – I will stick with Hilton (enjoy the stay or you don’t pay).

I think the best welcome amenity I’ve ever received was chocolate– but like REALLY good chocolate. That or bottles of wine. Most of the other ones are nice to have but not mind blowing.
