SPG Hotels 35% Resort Discount Returns!

There are many great ways to use SPG points, but one of the best redemptions are for their spectacular resort properties. SPG runs a promotion roughly every year where they discount the points required for free night redemptions. This has returned!

I earn most of my SPG points with the Starwood American Express Credit Card, which is the only card directly earning SPG in Canada. The US also has the same Starwood Credit Card that also earns 1 point per $ spent.

SPG Hotels 35% Points Discount

Until March 5, 2018, you can get 35% off the points required when redeeming points for several properties. This must be done over the phone. You receive the discount at booking and must stay by March 5. The 35% discount also stacks on top of fifth night free for even further savings.

Normally, SPG’s award chart caps the price for a Category 7 at 30/35k points per night. However, the sale covers hotels and resorts that are “speciality properties.” According to SPG’s definitions, they do not have any standard rooms and thus require additional points. As a result, these properties normally cost twice the normal 30,000 Category 7 cost.

With the fifth night free, each property costs the following per night:

  • 20,800 Points: The Naka Island, Phuket
  • 31,200 Points: St. Regis Punta Mita, St. Regis Bahia Beach, Le Meridien Bora Bora, Vana Belle Koh Samui, W Koh Samui, and Al Maha, A Luxury Collection Resort
  • 46,800 Points: St. Regis Maldives, St. Regis Bora Bora, W Maldives

It’s fantastic that this comes right after the increased bonus for their Starwood Preferred Guest Personal and Business American Express Card. Until October, you can earn 25,000 SPG points per card after completing the minimum spend. If you get both cards, you will earn 53,000 SPG points.

Redeeming SPG Points for Resorts

While these resorts are pricy, they are in the most attractive holiday locations in the world – Koh Samui, Maldives, Bora Bora, and more. One of the properties I want to visit is the Al Maha Resort in the United Arab Emirates. The resort is all inclusive, and I’ve heard great things about it. If you’re curious, see this review by One Mile at a Time.

A normal cash rate costs $1700+ a night inclusive of taxes for a sample date in October. Each night costs only 31,200 points with a five night redemption. Calculating the numbers, you receive close to 5.5 cents of value per point with this redemption.

Need More Starpoints?

If you need additional Starpoints, Membership Rewards transfers at a 2:1 ratio. So, if you wanted to redeem 5 nights at Al Maha with a friend, that will cost 156,000 Points. If you both sign up for the Personal SPG American Express and the Business SPG American Express, that yields 112,000 SPG points. For the additional 44,000 SPG points, that requires 88,000 Membership Rewards points. You can get 75,000 from the American Express Business Platinum Card, and an additional 30,000 from the AMEX Gold Rewards Card.

  1. I am interested in Al Maha, but five nights is too many. Two nights would be ideal. 39,000 starpoints per night is 78,000 Amex MR points per night, which I value at CAD 1.5 cents, making per night cost CAD $1,170, versus paid rate of CAD $2,240.

Good savings, but only if you otherwise were going to pay CAD $2,240 cash anyway. I would never pay anything close to CAD $1,170, let alone CAD $2,240.

I value 39,000 starpoints or 78,000 Amex MR points way more than a night at a resort, even if all inclusive. I could instead use those points to book a one way business class award ticket to almost anywhere in the world!

  2. Hi Jeff, I just canceled my SPG maybe 2 months ago. How long should I wait before I reapply?

Also, what are the chances I will get the Mariott 50,000 bonus if I had it nov 2016.

    thanks susan
