How to dump YQ on award tickets!

Deal now dead, unfortunately.

Welcome to another part of my amazing secrets series.

I hope this one will be pretty mindblowing. This one is for me. So, I sorta like fuel dumps. Basically, what they do is reduce the fuel surcharge on the fare so that the cost proposition becomes much better. Now I know that not everyone likes economy class fares. But hang on. Why is this a miles/points and points secret?

That’s because today, I will show you a glitch that will dump fuel surcharge on a certain frequent flyer program. Guess which one? 😉

WARNING: PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE AIRLINE OR AEROPLAN AND ASK ABOUT THIS!!

If you aren’t currently familiar with the Aeroplan program I wrote about fuel surcharges with Aeroplan here.

Let me give you an example to make it more clear. For example, a Vancouver – Sydney flight on Air Canada Business Class is 135,000 miles and $1063.51, thanks to fuel surcharges as Air Canada is one of the airlines which Aeroplan has fuel surcharges on. You can’t book an itinerary with 2 stopovers online, so this is not a “maximized” redemption. I’m just using it for the sake of illustration.

This redemption has $880 of fuel surcharges which should be the same as a paid fare:

But by using this glitch which is quite amazing, you can dump 100% of the fuel surcharge with Air Canada on Aeroplan! It’s really simple actually. Just price with an open jaw and all YQ on AC flights go poof!

Dumped Flight 100%

Dumped Flight 100%

This dumps well over $800 of the YQ so the fuel surcharge here is only $27!

To an extent this also works with Lufthansa (First Class), which is why I might be flying quite a bit more LH F in the near future, especially with the United Devaluation. A simple open jaw works wonders dropping over 50% of the fuel surcharge (which is $400).

A regular itinerary prices as follows:

Regular Redemption

Regular Redemption

There is $1122 in taxes and fees and around $935 of this is in fuel surcharge.

Regular Fuel Surcharge

Regular Fuel Surcharge

However, a simple open jaw will work wonders. The taxes and fees decreases to $546, which is a bit high but much more palatable. Certainly it isn’t as good as what the dump does on AC which is 100% but this probably becomes one of the cheapest ways to fly Lufthansa first, especially given that Lifemiles is still 145,000 miles roundtrip which is well over 2,100 dollars.

The fuel surcharge here is only $398. That’s not bad at all!

Dumped YQ

Dumped YQ

As far as I know, this dump 100% of AC international flight awards to all regions including Europe, Asia, and Oceania, as well as around 50% of LH and OS flights to Europe. You can’t dump TPAC as far as I have looked on OZ or NH. I think this would if you call in although I’m not quite sure. The open jaw must be between Canada and the US, otherwise I do believe that YQ is still charged. Please don’t call Aeroplan.

Also, this may change as Aeroplan are revamping their award charts so as they’re rewriting the online booking system this might be corrected as well.

For the people who are not familiar with fuel dumps, this is technically not a “fuel dump” in that it removes YQ on a paid ticket with a 3x or 1x or double decker or other dump. But I do think this one is useful for everyone if they want to fly AC or LH or other airlines on awards!

Remember Aeroplan is a transfer partner of both AMEX MR in the US and in Canada.

WARNING: PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE AIRLINE OR AEROPLAN AND ASK ABOUT THIS!!

This is really sensitive and could be easily killed off by Aeroplan VERY easily, so please use your discretion when discussing this online!

I hope you enjoyed the post, thanks for the support! Feel to comment if you have any questions.

If you have something private you’d like to discuss then feel free to email me. I found this glitch myself, so stop asking whether I stole it from FT or not (it doesn’t even exist on FT as far as I’m concerned). As always if you tell me something and ask me to keep it secret, you have my word.

  1. This has existed for quite some time now. Haven’t checked in some time but most of the open jaw tricks discussed in the FT thread for paid tickets used to work on Aeroplan award tickets, if the routing was allowed. Hope this does not disappear.

  2. wow great trick. I’ll probably never use it cause I dont have anything in aeroplan but great trick. Do you know anything to dump award tickets with BA avios ?

  3. Thanks dude, that was awesome, you are the first one to share something like this, i have tried fuel dumping before but without any success

  4. OK – I am a bit of a novice when it comes to Open Jaws, etc. In your first example, I see that the flight says “1 stop” vs. Direct, but where is that stop? And, if you book it as an open jaw ticket, don’t you have to do an overland segment somewhere? Is it necessary to do an overnight or something somewhere?
