Aeroplan is running their transfer promotion which gives bonuses on miles/points convert TO Aeroplan points. These promotions are pretty consistent, with the last one running 6 months ago in November, and the previous one running last April. Most points programs are included, however, AMEX Membership Rewards is not, which is unfortunate. The aeroplan transfer promotion bonus is tiered as follows:
The maximum number of bonus miles you can earn from the promotion is 25,000, and is cumulative. Aeroplan will be adding up all the miles received from partners to determine the bonus. This means a transfer of 100,000 miles is the best value, if you have a use for the points, yielding 125,000 Aeroplan points with a 25% bonus.
The partners that are included in the bonus include most hotel programs, as well as points.com (for transfers out of Aeroplan).
In most cases, I wouldn’t not convert hotel points to Aeroplan since generally the conversion ratios are fairly poor, except for SPG where 80,000 SPG points will yield 125,000 from the 25% spg to aeroplan transfer bonus stacked further with this promotion.
Marriott Rewards Nights and Flights Packages may also be worth considering, but you do need a lot of points and in some cases Marriott has other transfer partners such as Alaska which may be better.
Aeroplan certainly isn’t the program it used to be with the multitude of devaluations that have happened in the last year or two, but there are still certain sweet spots, including Europe business class for 90,000 miles roundtrip, with two stopovers. They does have fuel surcharges on certain airlines, so you want to fly on airlines that Aeroplan doesn’t have a fuel surcharge on. You can see the list of fuel-surcharge free airlines here.
Luckily for me, I have more than enough Aeroplan to work with so I will not be partaking in this promotion, but some of you may find value if you have a lot of hotel points. This aeroplan transfer promotion will run until May 24.
