Singapore Airlines The Private Room Review

This is a continuation of my flights from Vancouver to Melbourne via Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Singapore on Singapore First and Suites Class. To see how I booked my flights, see my planning and booking post.

After my flight from Tokyo, I made a trek towards the Singapore Private room, accessible only to Singapore Airlines First Class passengers. I’ve been to both the Business and First class sections of SilverKris Lounge, but this was my first time in the Private Room. The Private Room is located behind both sections of the SKL, and so you’ll have your documents and ticket verified thrice – once at the entrance to the lounge, once at the First Class section, and once at the entrance to the Private Room.

The Private Room is actually not that big, but generally is not that crowded until the bank of reverse red-eye flights to Europe. At that time, there is still plenty of seating. When you enter, there’s a selection of reading material, as well as a flight display board located beside a desk staffed by an agent presumably if you needed to contact someone for flight changes and other inquiries.

The SilverKris Lounges are tastefully decorated with rich dark colours, marble, and other “grand” decor you’d find in a luxury hotel.

There are also separate private rooms available, which probably makes it the “private” area in Changi, having to get through the series of SilverKris Lounges.

After I took a seat, a server came by to take a drink order. The chairs aren’t actually that comfortable, and I recall a lot of the cushions would make funny sounds when you sat on them. I got some work done for a bit, then decided to head to the dining area for some food.

Here was the menu.

I had a bit of made-to-order food which was not exactly top restaurant quality, but tasty enough. I also ordered fairly simple comfort food, so that might have been a reason as well.

To burn the calories off, I decided to walk around the concourses, something I love to do whenever I’m in Changi. Changi is one of my favourite airports in the world because their terminals are all connected airside. I’d walk from the A Gates in Terminal 3 to the F Gates in Terminal 2, then take the Skytrain back, a fantastic workout with great people-watching opportunities.

During my walk, I also picked up a voucher that was offered as a promotion with my ticket. Singapore Airlines offers a transit program where you can pick up a SGD $20 or $40 voucher for use in most outlets in the airport for tickets issued on Singapore Airlines or SilkAir ticket stock (e-ticket numbers starting with 618 and 086).

This can be picked up at the iShop Changi counters. Since the origin of my ticket was from the US, I was entitled to a $20 voucher.

I decided to spend this at the newest lounge at Changi, the Airport Wellness Oasis Lounge. The primary focus of this lounge is actually is a spa-type lounge, with massage and other treatments. The other food offerings and amenities were quite lacking, so I didn’t snap any photos.

This lounge partners with Priority Pass, so I could access it with the membership that came with my American Express Platinum Card, currently offering a 60,000 Membership Rewards Signup Bonus. Another reason why I find the Platinum Card to bring incredible value for most travellers

Priority Pass was also running a promotion where you could use the Fish Foot Spa for free. I used the voucher to get a short massage, which was pleasant.

I probably had gotten collectively around 11 hours of sleep in the past 48 hours, so I was getting more and more tired as my connection progressed, which was for around six hours. The Private Room doesn’t have any daybeds, unlike the rooms at the Thai First Class Lounge or Lufthansa First Class Terminal, so I pulled together two longer chairs, got a blanket from the lounge staff, and napped in 20 minute bursts for the rest of my layover.

I also took a shower at some point. The SilverKris lounge has nice showers, although the wall-mounted soap and shampoo dispensers felt very cheap.

On the other end of the spectrum, they also had Salvatore Ferragamo hand cream and toiletries by the sinks.

I started walking to the gate around 40 minutes before departure. Changi has at-gate security, which I’m not a fan of, although I arrived during Last Call so the line had mostly thinned out by then.

At the gate, I snapped a shot of the Boeing 777-300 that would take me to Melbourne on one of the best flights of my life.

Final Thoughts on the Singapore Airlines Private Room

As my first visit to the Private Room, the lounge didn’t blow me away like some First Class lounges do. Having been in January to the First Class section of the SilverKris Lounge accessible to non-SQ Star Alliance Passengers in First Class, I’d actually there isn’t that much difference between the SilverKris Lounge and the Private Room, other than the menu and waiter service.

It certainly has a wide selection of food, nice amenities such as bar service, attentive lounge agents, and such, but nothing spectacular like some of the other international first class lounge out there. The Private Room is still a very good First Class Lounge, although not something I’d specifically want to put in a long connection time for. I did enjoy my visit to the lounge, however.

  1. Great review! I was curious about the transit voucher–is that offered with any international ticket? Including award tickets? I hadn’t heard of this benefit before.

    Thanks!

  2. Nice report. I always feel self conscious taking pictures, but you get lots of them. Much appreciated.

Thai Bangkok was the best FC lounge I have been in. Where should I plan next??

  3. I love this lounge, I’ve not been to all the posh ones out there but it’s exclusivity is what I like. Also the last 2x thought there my wife and 2 yo. They treated her like royalty and gave her tons of toys, and stuffed animals, that to this day 2 years later she still plays with. For me it was all about how they treated her, because I was so worried she would disturb others time there. Which thankfully she didn’t.

BTW the Qantas FCL at Sydney is amazing. I love the bath products and the dinner menu and drink selection are very cool. When you get there be sure to go to the very back and check out the old school departures board. It’s very cool. In a 4 month time I transited it 6x, and the same waiter was there every time, and after the second visit he remembered me by name.
