TD Aeroplan Visa No Annual Fee First Year!

Update: This promotion is now over. The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card now gives you the chance to earn up to 20,000 Aeroplan Miles. For more information, please use the link above directing you to the official TD website.

Since TD Canada Trust gained the right to issue Aeroplan co-branded cards, they’ve really strove to increase their bank’s market share in credit cards. This means the credit card market in Canada has been heating up steadily over the past few years.

We now see new cards with great benefits like the Scotiabank Gold American Express which earns 4x points/$ on select categories of spend, as well as cards from other issuers increasing their offers and benefits. Where I used to see the standard 15,000 miles as a signup bonus, most premium credit cards currently offer 25,000 or 30,000 as a norm.

Both TD and CIBC have Aeroplan co-branded credit cards. TD offers three variants of Aeroplan co-branded cards:

The Infinite Privilege comes with a steep $399 annual fee, not waived, so in nearly all scenarios I would not recommend getting it. The Visa Platinum and Visa Infinite cards are actually fairly similar, although the Infinite tends to have a better signup bonus, higher income requirement, and better benefits. This is as a result of being able to charge a higher interchange fee as a premium Visa credit card.

TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Improved Offer

The TD Aeroplan Infinite Visa has hovered around 15,000 – 25,000 points as a signup bonus for the past few months. With the exception of a promotion in October, the annual fee has always applied. However, through Aug 31th, the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite is now offering waived first year annual fees with a 25,000 Aeroplan mile signup bonus!

TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum Improved Offer

For those who don’t qualify for the Visa Infinite offer, the TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum Card similarly offers first year fee waived, as well as an increased signup bonus of 15,000 miles. This also is the best publicly available offer, available similarly until Aug 31th. If you are applying for this card, you have to scroll down and click through to see the offer as TD heavily favours customers applying for their Visa Infinite product.

To earn the full 15,000 miles, you need to spend $1000 in purchases within the first 90 days of card membership.

TD Aeroplan Visa Increased Signup Bonus

The signup bonus for the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite card is 15,000 miles on first purchase, and 10,000 miles after $1000 spending within the first three months. The annual fee is rebated after two monthly statements. To my knowledge, this is the highest current welcome bonus for this card.

I value Aeroplan miles at a minimum of 1.7 cents, so this offer is worth a minimum of $425, and perhaps even more depending on your valuation. The best use for most families or those who don’t currently have a balance of Aeroplan miles is a continental North America trip with a free stopover. If you lived in Vancouver, you could head to Orlando with a stop in Ottawa. The ticket if you paid the cash price conservatively would be at least $600.

If you are considering getting other credit cards, see my post on applying for multiple credit cards in a day, known as “churning”. Generally, you’d be getting one card from each issuer, so another great card with the annual fee waived would be the American Express Gold Rewards Card, which offers 25,000 American Express Reward Points, transferrable to Aeroplan at a 1:1 ratio. You can see my review of the card here. That means if you got both cards, you’d be earning over 50,000 points from two credit card applications.

45,000 miles will get you a one-way business class trip to Europe. If you avoid fuel surcharges on Aeroplan by flying a carrier like Swiss or Turkish, taxes would be under $150. Purchasing a similar cash ticket would cost at the very minimum $1250. Earning rewards from credit cards, have allowed me to travel the world for next to nothing, and maximized my travel dollar.

TD Aeroplan Visa No Annual Fee First Year

The fine print of the offer has remained the same since the last time the card had an increased signup bonus and offered first year annual fee waived, which was in October. It’s worth noting that the public TD Bank website only displays an offer of 15,000 miles, which is inferior to the 25,000 Aeroplan miles offer available. You can see the entire details of the at the bottom of the application page.

In regards to having multiple accounts open:

If you have opened an Account in the last 6 months, you will not be eligible for this offer. TD Canada Trust reserves the right to limit the number of Accounts opened by, and the number of Welcome Bonus Miles awarded to, any one person.

To get the annual fee waived:

Annual Fee will be reversed within 2 monthly statements from the date of the charge. Annual Fee for any Authorized User Cards added to the Account continue to apply. You must apply for the Account by Aug 31, 2015. Existing TD Aeroplan Cardholders are not eligible for this offer.

This means to be eligible:

  • You currently cannot hold any TD Aeroplan Visa credit card (although if you do have one, closing it and waiting a few days would clear this requirement)
  • You cannot have gotten a TD Aeroplan credit card within the last six months

You can apply for the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite here and the TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum here (scroll down).

  1. […] You can also book this using Aeroplan, which is 25,000 one-way and 50,000 roundtrip. The great thing about Aeroplan is that you’re permitted one-stopover even on a roundtrip North America trip, which is a good way to maximize your award. The best way to earn these miles are with the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite. It currently has a limited-time 25,000 Aeroplan miles signup offer with first year fee waived. 1. Thanks for this info. Just to pass along my experience: I found TD very accommodating when I applied in November 2014 — I was a little late (I think it was a day after the offer expired at that time?), but they still accepted me — got the 25,000 miles after my $1000 spend, no problems.
As always, though, take screen shots of the offers so that you you have something to fall back on if there’s any hassles.

  2. When I apply for the TD infinite Visa, the agreement page date Jan 1, 2014 still show $120 annual fee. I feel uncomfortable checking the box and accepting the condition. Should I be concerned and can I call TD and ask them ?

  3. I called TD twice to verify the offer. The first time they put me on hold and later told me there is currently no “no annual fee” offer. They ask for the TD website which I could not provide at the time. The second time I called to provide the website, they asked for my client ID to see if I was offered an exclusive offer. I told her that I was not emailed an exclusive offer. I received the TD link from this blog. I appreciate if anyone can verify this link as current to Jan 2015.

    • Under legal, footnote 2, it states: “To receive the 10,000 Aeroplan Miles Bonus (“10,000 Miles Bonus”), you must apply for a TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card Account (“Account”) by May 8, 2015, be approved, and have $1,000 in Purchases, including your first Purchase, posted to your Account within the first 90 days of Account opening.”

      • I did not see that. It is quite clearly stated when you expand the footnote. Thanks for pointing that out. Cheers.

  4. Hi – great site, I’m a fan.

I have a TD Aeroplan card that I activated last May under a 15,000 bonus point, no fee for the first year deal. I am thinking of closing my account now, waiting a month or two, and then applying for a new TD Aeroplan card (same one) under this new promotion. Since my account was activated over 6 months ago (May ’14), do you think I’ll be eligible for the promotion?

    • Thanks for visiting! The terms and conditions state that “If you have opened an Account in the last 6 months, you will not be eligible for this offer”, so it looks like you’re in the clear. However, they do reserve the right to limit the signup bonus, although I’m guessing you’ll be okay applying. Let me know if you have any other questions.

  5. Hi, thanks for the info. Have been waiting for a while.
Tried to apply online but it didn’t pass the step 2 and asked me to either call or go to TD branch.

I called TD help line and the lady (pretty rude) interrogated me where did I get the offer? I said TD website and she said it did not offer in TD website. I told her to wait and I will find the link and then she hung up the phone. I am planning to call again but need to know what should I said when they asked me where did I get this offer? Please advise. Thanks!

  6. What credit report does TD pull from?

What other credit cards should I sign up for at the same time?

    • TD pulls from Equifax. You can signup for any other cards that aren’t from the same issuer – i.e. you can’t get two TD cards at once. I’d recommend one of the AMEX cards that has a promo right now, such as the SPG, AMEX Gold, or AMEX BIZ Gold. I’d also recommend the Alaska MC, since Alaska miles are very valuable.

  7. Hi,

Can this fee still be waived? I asked a td representative and they were telling me that offer is no longer available as that was an offer from last year. I just wanted to confirm with anyone who might have gotten theirs waived for Year 1.

  8. Beware: This link does not work and now I am out $120!
After speaking to the TD call center a couple times they said whatever website I received the link from (this website) would need to give me the additional points and waive the fee which obviously did not happen.

    • Brent,

That’s not correct. You should talk to a supervisor and show them the offer page details and/or quote code gZQM3. As this is a link on the official TD website, you should reach out to them to claim the fee waiver and additional points. I’m not involved with that at all, but if you do need help please email me.

  9. Is the 1st year free and the extra 10,000 (with 1,000 purchase in 90 days) still valid. I keep trying to fill out the form and then when I click submit it tells me the website is down/try again – i’ve been trying a couple of days. When I just go to TD website I can find the 15,000 sign up bonus but not the waived fee or the extra 10,000 with purchase.
    Thanks

  10. TD website still appears to be down. Can you provide me the source code so i can call in the application today.
