The RBC British Airways 50000 Avios Offer is back!

RBC issues a British Airways co-branded card, and annually they’ve had an increased bonus of 50,000 Avios on their Visa Infinite card. This further heats up the credit card market in Canada, which has offers of historical highs, such as the 30,000 Aeroplan for the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite, and 75,000 points for the American Express Platinum and Business Platinum Cards.

The 50,000 Avios are handed out in two chunks: 15,000 on approval, and 35,000 after spending $9000 in three months. This is a very steep spending requirement, the highest in Canada, but it is easily doable if you put all of your organic spend on it, as well as utilize manufactured spend methods to hit the $9000.

You must apply before May 31, 2016, to be eligible for the increased offer, and have to be a new cardholder. Existing cardholders are not eligible.

You also get the companion certificate after spending $30,000 in a year, which could be worth it if you are willing to pay fuel surcharges on British Airways. It would only ever be worth it for First Class, as that’s the half decent First Class product available on transatlantic flights (United doesn’t count) that’s available in advance. They are also putting the A380 this summer on Vancouver – London, which is exciting.

The annual fee is a steep $165, although you do get that waived if you have VIP banking. RBC usually runs a promotion for signing up for this around May – last year they gave you a free iPad for signing up. If you don’t already have VIP banking, I would recommend signing up for both products then.

Although Avios devalued their award chart chart recently, there are still many transborder redemptions which are still a fantastic value. 50,000 Avios gets you 6 one-way awards between Vancouver – Los Angeles and Toronto – Miami, for example. Given these tickets routinely go for $150-200, this credit card bonus could be worth upwards of $1000 if used correctly.

If you need to top up your Avios account, keep in mind that AMEX Membership Rewards also transfers to Avios at a 1:1 ratio. The American Express Platinum and Business Platinum Cards are offering a stunning 75,000 points for signing up, so if you got both cards in one go, you’d have upwards of 125,000 Avios.

  1. Curious to hear more about how you’d manufacture spend in Canada without too much drag.. Haven’t found much good for more than maybe 1K/mo. myself..

  2. A great card but hard to get. Last time I applied RBC wanted to see my income/T4 slips. They don’t easily approve applicants like Amex.
