Generally, I like traditional loyalty programs more than cashback. That’s because I highly value premium class flights and luxury hotels which have high retail prices.
In my wallet, I use cards like the American Express Platinum Card, TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite, and the Starwood American Express. These credit card all have some of the best signup offers to date. For more details, check out these posts:
- Earn up to 30,000 Aeroplan Miles with the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite!
- Starwood American Express: Get up to 20,000 SPG Points (25,000 Aeroplan)!
- Incredible offer for the American Express Platinum Card!
However, I like cashback cards as well. In certain cases, it might be an even better value.
Tangerine Credit Card Details
Tangerine is a direct bank with a small retail presence but lower fees. I’m a big fan of Tangerine, and have had their checking and savings account products for quite a while. If you don’t have one yet, Tangerine is offering up to $150 to open a checking and savings account. Their credit card is also very promising.
The Tangerine Credit Card offers 1% cashback on all purchases, in line with most other issuers. However, what’s really rewarding is that you get 4% cashback for the first three months, with no limits.
To select three categories to get 4% cashback from, you must have a Tangerine Savings Account.
Tangerine Credit Card 4% Cashback – Recurring Bill Payments
What catches my eye is recurring bill payments with the Tangerine Credit Card. From the cardholder agreement:
Recurring Bill Payment: Recurring bill payments are defined as payments made on a monthly or other regular basis, and which are automatically billed by the merchant to your Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card, such as your monthly phone bill. Not all merchants offer recurring payments, and not all ongoing payments will be considered “recurring payments” for purposes of this category. Please check with your merchant to see if your recurring payment qualifies.
From what I’ve read online, most preauthorized payments, such as your phone bill, insurance, and media subscriptions (Netflix) fall under this category, earning you 4% back. With this category, as well as home improvement and furniture, no other cards offer any sort of bonus multiplier close to this card.
Credit Cards Earning 4% Cashback
Other than the Tangerine Credit Card, you can also earn a 4% return with the Scotiabank Gold American Express on gas, groceries, entertainment, and dining. The current offer is for 20,000 points and a first year annual fee waiver.
This card has a limit of $50,000 in purchases per calendar year to earn 4 points per dollar, so now is a good time to apply as 2017 is almost upon us. I know many people who spend thousands of dollars a month on these categories, so getting these cards should be an easy decision.
Manufactured Spend Opportunities
I haven’t applied for the Tangerine Credit Card yet. However, I know friends who have gotten the Scotiabank Gold American Express card for MS purposes, since a lot of prepaid products are sold at grocery store and gas stations. If you stack them with in-store reward program promotions, the return is quite significant.
Because you purchased the reload vouchers at a supermarket, utilizing the prepaid product for everyday purchases means you’re earning 4% cashback on all purchases. That’s all I will say here. 😉
