Hyatt is one of my favourite hotel chains because their points are extremely valuable. For Canadians, Hyatt points are hard to earn because there are no co-branded credit cards. Thus, a good way to earn points other than staying at Hyatt properties are through purchase promotions.

Until December 15, 2017, you can earn up to a 40% bonus when purchasing Hyatt points. This promotion is valid for all members. You earn the maximum 40% Bonus buying 30,000 or more points. If you buy the maximum amount, 77,000 Hyatt points will cost you $1,320. There is no additional GST/HST charged for Canadian residents, which is great.

These purchases are not categorized as travel, so use a credit card that does not have a foreign transaction fee and/or maximizes everyday spend. When deciding to buy points, make sure you have an idea of how you will use them. In nearly all cases, I do not purchase points speculatively. My travel preference are for luxury hotels, which is why Hyatt points are so valuable to me.

Hyatt’s most expensive properties only cost 30,000 points, as opposed to Marriott (70,000), Hilton (95,000) or Starwood (30,000). The example I most like to use is the Park Hyatt Maldives. A three night stay will run you at least $1125 at the non-refundable rate, and $1500 for their best flex rate. On the other hand, this Park Hyatt is a Category 6 property, requiring only 25,000 points. This works out to $428 a night, a significant discount.

Is It Worth Purchasing Hyatt Points?

Even if you’re not going to the Maldives, there are plenty of other high-value redemptions out there. The Andaz Tokyo and Park Hyatt Vienna are among my favourite Hyatt properties, and consistently see nightly rates of $600 or more. They cost only 12.5K + $150 on Cash and Points, which is a fantastic value especially if you are a Globalist Member.

I just came back from a trip to the United Arab Emirates, and stayed at the Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi, a Category 5 hotel that cost 20,000 points. The property had extremely high rates during the period I stayed there. With the Suite Upgrade certificate I used, the room was going for 6,750 AED (~$1,840). That’s a pretty good redemption in my book.

In addition, Hyatt Globalist members can use their Guest of Honor perk to extend elite benefits when redeeming their points for others, so you can get an even better deal transferring your points to an elite account. Transfers are free and permitted once every 30 days.

Overall, purchasing Hyatt points make sense when you have a redemption in mind that saves you money on a stay. There are also many other private hints and tips to save even more money at Hyatts, so send me a message if you want details.
