Daily Getaways are among one of my favourite deals. It’s hosted by the US Travel Association, and features a huge variety of travel deals through April and early May. You can get theme park tickets, hotel points, rental car free night certificates, and more. The first set of packages went on sale this morning.

You can view the deals available the first three weeks. A preview of the last two weeks is also available somewhere on the web. All purchases are in US Dollars, so make sure to use a US credit card which can be obtained through AMEX Global Transfer, or a card with no foreign transaction fees such as the new Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite. You needed a US billing address in previous years, so some Canadian credit cards would let you make the purchase by substituting your postal code for a ZIP code.
There can be some deals that are fantastic value. Unfortunately, the better value the deal, the fewer the packages available. The most prominent example are Hyatt points (which are also available for purchase this year). When there are 50 packages available and thousands of people trying to get them… good luck.

However, there are many other great deals, whether they’re free hotel nights or points. I’m thinking about picking up some Choice Hotel points which will run just under 0.5 cents per mile. This is significantly less than any other existing way to buy these points, and they have some great luxury hotel redemptions with their partnership with Preferred Hotels and Resorts. Be sure to read the package details, as they may advertise a free night at a particular property, but you are actually able to choose from any hotel in that particular category.
Overall, I’d recommend you purchase packages that you intend to use in the near future. It’s not a good idea to prepay for travel items and then have them devalue. As well, keep in mind that you likely forgo credit card protection when purchasing rental car points/certificates through Daily Getaways. Most credit cards, like the American Express Platinum Card, require the full value of the rental to be charged to the card.

Thanks for the post! Never heard of this before, I browsed a couple days, did some math on IHG, there was a discount, but not good enough to buy speculative. But the $30 one day car rental? Probably worth it so I think I’ll probably partake.

Question, do you still earn miles/whatever off these? Or are they like buying from an OTA? EX: If I buy this Avis car rental, can I still rent that car and earn my 200 Aeroplan miles (or whatever the AP rate is?) or do I get 0 as if I bought it from Expedia?

Well that certainly devalues it a bit. Still a good “value” out of a daily email subscription.
So, to clarify, it is also unlikely that it will meet Amex spend requirements to earn bonus points or even to earn points on Amex if their card is used to buy hotel points?
That’s absolutely false. These purchases are definitely considered qualifying transactions in terms of meeting minimum spend, and also earn points like a regular purchase.
