American Express is one my favourite credit card issuer in Canada. In addition to the excellent bonuses for the increased SPG American Express cards, the Gold Rewards Card is one of the best cards for beginners, letting you earn up to 30,000 points with the first year free.
Update: Annual Fee Now Charged.
Today is the last day to get the card with the first year annual fee waived. Starting tomorrow, September 14, the card will charge a $150 annual fee with the 30,000 point signup bonus. There are three other cards earning Membership Rewards that are not affected:
- American Express Business Platinum Card: Get up to 75,000 Membership Rewards Points!
- American Express Business Gold Card: Get up to 40,000 Membership Rewards Points!
- American Express Platinum Card: Get up to 60,000 Membership Reward Points!
American Express transfers at a 1:1 ratio to Aeroplan and BA Avios. There is also a 25% transfer bonus to Avios – so this is a great card to earn fantastic rewards with. 30,000 points is enough for two business class round-trips to Los Angeles, or over half-way towards a one-way business class trip to Europe, which starts at 55,000 Aeroplan points.
The current offer is as follows:
Earn our American Express Gold Rewards Card of 25,000 Membership Rewards points when you charge $1,500 in purchases to your Card in the first three months of card membership and an additional 5,000 Membership Rewards points for one approved Supplementary Card added to your account at time of online application. That’s a total of 30,000 Membership Rewards points that you could earn! / No annual fee for the first year – A value of $150.
Other benefits with the card include a comprehensive bundle of travel and purchase insurance, as well as a category bonus of 2x points on eligible travel purchases, gas, groceries, and drugstores. While this card does contain the one bonus per cardholder language, current reports are that this is not being enforced. So even if you have had this card before, it is worth trying to apply again to get this card free for the first year.

Good night
Thanks Jeff for the heads up
Was planning to refer to a ‘friend’ only to discover that that ended a month or so ago. So I used your link for my friend hoping that it still works for you.
cheers
Not sure that it does since Amex ended referrals for the gold card, but thank you. Appreciate it 🙂
Held this card and cancelled end of June.
Worth trying to apply again today (for new card / bonus) or will they just re-activate? I’ve heard of the “3 month” guideline / rule to wait before re-applying but will only apply if FYF.
If you closed in June, it shouldn’t be a re-activate situation.
Thank you for your post. I applied before the deadline. I did have this card before (cancelled it about a year ago), so I am wondering when I would know if I will receive the one-time welcome bonus points again or not… do I need to wait until the 3-month $1,500 minimum spend is done in order to find out if they decide to issue me the bonus points again? Thank you.
Yep, still free as of this morning. Solid intel.
Looks like the two blogs that wrote about it saying they had “solid” sources were wrong.
Pretty sure it was FYF until Sept 14, 2017. Not Sept 13, 2017
Well it’s, Sept 14, 2017… and surprise! no longer FYF
Not anymore!
Ladies and Gentlemen … Jeff
What is with all the attitude on here? The guy is doing a decent job of providing information. I would hate to see commenters have the same attitude in real life at their jobs, with their families, etc.
I visit this site for valuable information related to Canadian credit cards and find it fairly informative. Keep up the good work!
Have you ever met Jeff? Lol
I did not get an answer to my post, so I am trying one more time…

Yes, you’d need to complete the minimum spend to see.
