Aeroplan has had problems booking EVA Air award space for the past few weeks, which was a major source of frustration for many members, as they had excellent fuel surcharge free transpacific award space access.
Availability is now back online and bookable by the phone on aeroplan.com for all routes, including transpacific and intra-Asia flights.
Availability tends to be best 9-11 months before the travel date, as EVA for the most part will make award seats available far out. Last-minute seats released 2-14 days before departure is also excellent and especially good from Los Angeles and San Francisco which have multiple daily flights. The space bookable with Aeroplan should match the availability displayed on United.com and the ANA Tool.
EVA flies the Boeing 777-300ER with reverse-herringbone fully flat seats to all destinations except select Seattle flights and Vancouver (grrrr!). Their onboard product is also exceptional as they are one of the few airlines to have Dom Perignon, pajamas, and Rimowa Amenity Kits in business class. I also love their matcha/green tea lattes.
The two other airlines flying transpacific routes that doesn’t have fuel surcharges levied by Aeroplan are United and Air China. For more information on that, see my post on fuel surcharges with Aeroplan.
Remember that Aeroplan miles are fairly easy to accumulate in Canada. A simple way to boost your Aeroplan balance if you’re Canadian is the American Express AeroplanPlus Gold Card offers a limited-time bonus of 30,000 miles upon signup and $500 spend within three months, and the first year annual fee waived. I wrote a complete review of the card in this post.
