According to Rewards Canada, American Express is raising the minimum spend for their Platinum Card from $1,000 to $3,000 starting March 23rd, tomorrow.
American Express currently has four charge cards with improved bonuses – which are all historical highs.
- American Express Business Platinum Card: Get up to 75,000 Membership Rewards Points!
- American Express Business Gold Card: Get up to 40,000 Membership Rewards Points!
- American Express Platinum Card: Get up to 60,000 Membership Reward Points!
- American Express Gold Rewards Card: Get up to 30,000 Membership Rewards Points!
Of all these cards, the Platinum card offers the best travel benefits – and for most people it’s a must have. It’s the only card in Canada that offers a annual $200 travel credit, along with free lounge access with Priority Pass and AMEX lounges. Currently, the welcome bonus is 60,000 points (transferrable 1:1 to Aeroplan or Avios) after $1,000 of spend within the first three months.
To my understanding, the signup bonus will stay the same – however, if you have trouble meeting minimum spends (0r even don’t), I would recommend getting on applying for the card today before that deadline so you are able to get the bonus just because it’ll be less hassle.
I’m rather glad whenever minimum spends are raised – it really asks consumers to put the card front of wallet, which is exactly what card issuers want – cutting out people who just spend that small amount and leave it.
