American Express is my favourite issuer in Canada, and while people are complaining that they’re tightening up against churners, I actually don’t mind given that their rewards programs and customer service is just so strong.
They offer four Membership Rewards Cards worth getting:
- American Express Business Platinum Card: Get up to 75,000 Membership Rewards Points!
- American Express Business Gold Card: Get up to 40,000 Membership Rewards Points!
- American Express Platinum Card: Get up to 60,000 Membership Reward Points!
- American Express Gold Rewards Card: Get up to 30,000 Membership Rewards Points!
AMEX Gold Rewards Card Welcome Offer Increased!
For this quarter, the welcome bonus for the AMEX Gold Rewards Card has increased to 30,000 points. Normally, the signup bonus is only 25,000 points after meeting minimum spend.
The official offer now states:
Earn our American Express Gold Rewards Card of 25,000 Membership Rewards points when you charge $1,500 in purchases to your Card in the first three months of card membership and an additional 5,000 Membership Rewards points for one approved Supplementary Card added to your account at time of online application. That’s a total of 30,000 Membership Rewards points that you could earn! Offer subject to change at any time.
To earn the full bonus, you do have to add an additional authorized user, although you could just add a friend or family member (and you’d never have to tell him/her about the card). The first year annual fee of $150 is waived. As well, your first supplementary card is free. This means after completing $1,500 of minimum spend in the first three months, you’ll get that welcome bonus.
American Express Membership Rewards transfers at a 1:1 ratio to Aeroplan to Avios. 30,000 points is enough for two business class round-trips to Los Angeles, or over half-way towards a one-way business class trip to Europe, which starts at 55,000 Aeroplan points.
This is a fantastic bonus for anyone who isn’t currently a cardholder, and is the highest publicly and historically I’ve seen.
The improved offer is only available via this application link. The public American Express site does not offer this increased bonus.
Combining this with a Business Card application such as the American Express Business Platinum Card or Business Gold Rewards Card, yields an additional 75,000 or 40,000 Membership Rewards points after meeting the minimum spend. That’s enough to get you a one-way Lufthansa First Class redemption! Alternatively, you could pick up the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite, which would earn you another 20,000 Aeroplan points.

Shockingly, I’ve never gotten the Gold Rewards Card. I only have the Business Gold Rewards and Business Platinum Card as a primary cardholder, so I’m likely going to pick up this card in the new few weeks. This is the very best offer out there, so if you’ve ever held off getting an American Express, now’s the time!

Whoops, literally just applied / got approved / and received my card in the mail yesterday haha.
See if they’ll match the increased offer.
Just by calling in?
What are the chances of getting the bonus again – i used your referral link
It highly depends on if you “applied” correctly. Send me an email 🙂
I’m confused. Is there some sort of secret regarding the question? Shouldn’t you tell your readers how to “apply” correctly?
No, there’s no secret, just email me if you want more information.
I’ve previously had an Amex gold card and am no longer eligible for the sign up bonus. Do you have an offer that can give me those points. I’d be very interested.
This is great! It used to be an additional 1000 MR for supplement cards after the application. This is as good as it gets for no-fee travel reward cards!
Thanks, Jeff!! Applied online, and was approved in 60 secs (or less).
I’d heard that AmEx was not approving applications from people who’d held AmEx cards previously. It appears this info was erroneous
Enjoy!
Thanks, this is great! Do you know when the promo expires? I might delay on the Platinum Card until as long as possible so that I can try to leverage a $200 travel credit for 2018 before cancelling.
Hi Jeff,
I got the offer 3-4 years ago and 25000 points.
Any idea of how I can now get 30000 points. Thank you for what you do.
