I’m a huge fan of status matches and challenges, because you get a taste of the benefits members enjoy without putting in all the nights or flights to qualify. In the past few years, I’ve been lucky to try out many top-tier statuses on airlines and hotels. One of my favourite is Hyatt Globalist, which I obtained from a challenge a few years ago.
SkyTeam Status Match – China Southern
Currently, there is a free SkyTeam status match available with China Southern. You can match to Sky Pearl Gold and Silver, which translates to SkyTeam Elite Plus and Elite status.
You’ll need a platinum or gold tier equivalent to get CS Pearl Gold (SkyTeam Elite Plus). Eligible statuses include:
- Oneworld Emerald/Sapphire: AA Platinum/Pro/Executive Platinum, BA Silver/Gold, etc.
- Star Alliance Gold: Air Canada 50k/75k/100k, United Gold/Platinum/1K , etc.
For CS Pearl Silver (SkyTeam Elite), you’ll need a silver-tier status or equivalent:
- Oneworld Ruby: AA Gold, BA Bronze, etc.
- Star Alliance Silver: Air Canada 25k, United Silver, etc.
Theoretically, you could also match from other SkyTeam statuses, but the additional benefits will be redundant.
China Southern Status Match Process
You need to first sign up for China Southern’s frequent flyer program. They have an Status Match Excel form you can fill out with your information. Once you do, send that to email@example.com along with a copy of your elite status card (virtual or physical), as well as a past program statement with recent activity.
While I don’t think I’ll be flying China Southern anytime soon, SkyTeam Elite Plus status is quite useful if you’re flying on Delta, Air France/KLM, or other partner airlines. You get lounge access, extra free bags, and other priority services like check-in, boarding, and security.
After submitting the info, you’ll get an email like this:

If your application is valid, you should receive the new status within a month. There’s also no published end date, which means China Southern could remove this any time. I currently don’t have any SkyTeam status, so I’ve just sent in my application. We’ll see what happens soon.
