However, it’s important to know that indirect transfers sometimes give better ratios, and this is one case.

First, note that AMEX transfers to SPG (in Canada) at a 2:1 ratio:

Next, if you transfer to SPG, those points can be further transferred to Hawaiian Airline Miles at a 1:1.25 ratio, if you’re transferring in increments of 20k.

Finally, you can transfer Hawaiian miles to Hilton points at a 1:2 ratio, in 5k increments:

Thus you get the following (take for example 40k AMEX)

40k AMEX -> 20k SPG -> 25k HA -> 50k Hilton

This is a BETTER transfer ratio than doing it directly, just like in the United States.

In the states, you would transfer directly to HA and then to Hilton, at a 1:2 ratio.
