Alaska Airlines MileagePlan miles are one of my favourite kinds of points, because they are so valuable towards redemptions on international business and first class redemptions. Right now, through July 1, you can earn up to a 50% bonus on purchased miles. That’s huge, although unfortunately a targeted offer – the public promotion is up to 40%. The 50% percent is the highest bonus amount, and hasn’t come around since mid-last year.
You should definitely check out whether you have that offer. At 50%, it is the best possible offer and a seriously good way to top up your account.
Alaska Buy Miles Promotion
For those targeted with a 50% bonus, the promotion is structured as follows:
- 20% bonus on 10,000-19,000 miles
- 35% bonus on 20,000-49,000 miles
- 50% bonus on 50,000-60,000 miles
With the regular promotion, you can earn up to a 40% bonus:
- 20% bonus on 10,000-19,000 miles
- 35% bonus on 20,000-39,000 miles
- 40% bonus on 40,000-60,000 miles
If you’re buying during this promotion, it’s only worth it to get the highest tier bonus – so either between 40/50-60k. That means with a 50% bonus, each mile will cost 1.97 cents per mile, and with a 40% bonus, 2.11 cents per mile.
The 50% bonus is the cheapest and fastest way to top up your account.
Keep in mind the MBNA Alaska Airlines MasterCard offers a 25,000 mile bonus, but you’re now only permitted to hold one card at a time, and a new application must be 6 months from when you close the account, so it is a lot more difficult to generate Alaska miles from credit cards.
The Starwood Preferred Guest AMEX and Starwood Business American Express also allow you to earn SPG miles that are transferrable to Alaska. The signup bonus for those cards are 20,000 miles after completing the minimum spend, resulting in 25,000 Alaska miles.
Alaska Miles are extremely valuable because they have a diverse set of partners from Emirates to Cathay Pacific and Icelandair and Fiji Airlines. My favourite redemption is 70,000 miles for First Class to Asia on JAL or Cathay Pacific. You’re permitted a stopover even on a one-way award, so my most recent redemption was Cathay First Class from New York JFK to Vancouver, stopping over in Vancouver, then continuing onward to Tokyo via Hong Kong a few months later.

“a new application must be 6 months from when you close the account”.
Is this a new policy ,as an MBNA agent,Nora, on Nov.22,2016 said that one can have as many MBNA cc as you want at same time .
Does Alaska have the miles purchase promotion often? I just got thr mana card through your referral.
They do every few months – although the 50% only happens once a year or so.
